Spirit Airlines adds 15 more nonstop routes from Detroit Metro Airport

Spirit Airlines said Wednesday it is adding 15 nonstop destinations from Detroit Metro Airport.
The new and resuming routes from Detroit are to: Austin, Birmingham, Charleston, Hartford, Louisville, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Norfolk, Phoenix, Punta Cana, Richmond, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Juan and St. Louis. Nine of the routes are new, while six of them are resuming.
Service will start in May or June and bring the airline’s routes from DTW to 40 destinations, which it says is the most nonstop routes it has ever offered from the airport.
“We’re adding even more popular travel options to our Detroit route map, giving our DTW Guests a variety of new destinations to discover across the country and beyond,” John Kirby, vice president of network planning at Spirit Airlines, said in a statement. “Savvy Motor City travelers will soon enjoy even more options to enjoy Spirit’s elevated experience at a value unmatched by other carriers.”
The new flights will be available for booking Thursday on spirit.com.
The new routes follow Spirit’s recent announcement of nonstop service from Detroit Metro starting in May to Baltimore, Charlotte, Memphis, Pensacola, Raleigh-Durham and San Antonio.
They also come months after Spirit filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition after working out terms with bondholders. The airline has lost more than $2.5 billion since the start of 2020 and faces looming debt payments totaling more than $1 billion in 2025 and 2026.
Frontier tried to merge with Spirit for the second time this year. In 2022, Frontier was outbid by JetBlue in a bid to buy the discount airline. However, the Justice Department sued to block the $3.8 billion JetBlue deal, saying it would drive up prices for Spirit customers who depend on low fares. A federal judge agreed. JetBlue and Spirit dropped their merger bid two months later.
