DEA, ICE, Coast Guard arrest illegal immigrants in Nantucket, Massachusetts
Published in News & Features
BOSTON — Multiple federal law enforcement agencies worked together to arrest illegal immigrants present on Nantucket, including one who has previously been charged with kidnapping.
“Agents on Cape Cod are assisting @ICEgov and @EROBoston with arrests of illegal criminal aliens on Nantucket. The male pictured had prior charges of domestic assault and battery and kidnapping. These two arrests happened in coordination with @USCGNortheast,” The Drug Enforcement Administration’s New England field office tweeted at around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday.
The regional U.S. Coast Guard account said that guardsmen stationed at Woods Hole “assisted in the arrest of 2 aliens near Nantucket” and that the pair were then taken into custody by the DEA.
The arrests come a day after the Boston field office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations unit — or ERO — announced it had arrested a convicted murderer who had escaped prison in his home country of Haiti.
“This apprehension demonstrates ICE’s relentless commitment to pursuing fugitives and ensuring they face justice, no matter where they attempt to hide,” ERO Boston acting director Patricia Hyde wrote in a statement announcing the arrest.
ERO officers arrested Wilbert Jean-Baptiste, 38, on Feb. 4, a day after the Haitian government told the office that he was wanted for homicide and had escaped from a prison there.
Jean-Baptiste entered the U.S. near Brownsville, Texas, and arrested by U.S. Border Patrol on Oct. 31, 2023. He was released with a notice to appear before an immigration judge. That judge ordered Jean-Baptiste be removed from the U.S. back to Haiti on May 17, 2024.
