MIAMI — President Donald Trump has endorsed Emilio González for Miami mayor, adding to the roster of major GOP politicians throwing their support behind the former city manager and deepening the partisan divide that has shaped the officially nonpartisan race ahead of the Dec. 9 runoff election.

“It is my Great Honor to endorse Emilio T. Gonzales (sic) to be the next Mayor of the Beautiful City of Miami, Florida!” Trump posted Sunday night on Truth Social.

“GET OUT AND VOTE FOR EMILIO — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” Trump added.

Trump’s endorsement could provide a helpful boost to González by rousing Republican voters in a city where registered Democrats outnumber them by about five percentage points. About 44% of the ballots cast in the Nov. 4 election came from Democrats compared to 30% from Republicans, according to a Miami Herald tally.

González placed second in the general election, behind Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, a Democrat who led the pack with 36% of the vote. Higgins scored nearly twice as many votes as González, who finished with under 20%. Third-place finisher Ken Russell, also a Democrat, nearly edged González out of the runoff with almost 18% of the vote.

González, a retired U.S. Army colonel and former director of Miami International Airport, is running on an anti-corruption platform while embracing the Republican brand. He’s netted the endorsements of Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida Sens. Rick Scott and Ashley Moody, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Rep. Byron Donalds.

In a post on X Sunday night, González thanked Trump for his support.

“Miami’s future is on the line,” González wrote, “and your support sends a powerful message that our city deserves strong, common-sense leadership.”
