DETROIT — Detroit Mayor-elect Mary Sheffield will host a public swearing-in ceremony for her new job as the city's first female leader at a free event the Detroit Opera House on Jan. 9.
The "public investiture" is free and will also include the swearing-in of Detroit City Council members, police commissioners and City Clerk Janice Winfrey. Tickets are available through the Detroit Opera website. More information is available at www.risehigherdetroit.com/investiture.
Sheffield officially takes office Jan. 1 in which she will be sworn-in as mayor at city hall, a spokeswoman for her transition team said Tuesday. The Jan. 9 event is intended to publicly highlight the city's first new mayor in 12 years.
“It was important to me that we host the investiture in a space that allowed the public to attend," Sheffield said in a statement Tuesday. "The people of this city have been with me every step of the way. This isn’t just my moment — this is Detroit’s moment and my administration will be the people’s administration.”
The event will feature performances from Detroit’s poet laureate Jessica Care Moore, the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences, gospel star Kierra Sheard and Detroit Opera House soloist Brianna Robison.
It will also be livestreamed on the city's cable channel and social media channels to ensure citywide access.
Sheffield, 38, succeeds Mayor Mike Duggan, who is leaving office to run for Michigan governor next year.
