Television Q&A: What movie is memorable Bette Davis quote from?

You have questions. I have some answers.

Q: I belong to a group we call “If I could make remarks like Bette Davis, my life would be perfect.” One of the ladies talked about when Bette said, “What a dump!” But what is the movie with it? We would love to see it.

A: That is from “Beyond the Forest,” a 1949 melodrama starring Davis, Joseph Cotton and David Brian. The line is one of Davis’ most famous, included in the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 most memorable movie quotes. (Davis is also on the list for “Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night” in “All About Eve” and “Don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars” in “Now, Voyager.”)

Q: I am wondering if “The Conners” will be returning. I have heard nothing, and it is one of my favorites.

A: The comedy will be back in March for what ABC is calling a “celebratory farewell season” — meaning the show’s last. That will complete a long run for the series which began as “Roseanne” back in 1988 and ended its original run in 1997. It then came back as “Roseanne” in 2018, only to be dropped after Barr made some racist remarks. ABC then revived it as “The Conners,” with Barr’s character killed off but many of the original cast members returning.

Q: I am curious as to who has appeared (and not just as the main star) in the most movies: Morgan Freeman or Samuel L. Jackson?

A: Although Samuel L. Jackson is about 10 years younger than Morgan Freeman, the Internet Movie Database indicates Jackson has been in more movies than his older colleague – around 180, versus roughly 125 for Freeman. That’s not counting performances in TV episodes, where Freeman has appeared more often.

Q: I enjoy old comedies such as “Seinfeld” and “M.A.S.H.” However, one of my favorites — "Will & Grace” — I can never find. Where could I find them?

A: Disney+ and Hulu have all of the comedy starring Debra Messing and Eric McCormack: the original eight seasons from 1998-2006 and the three seasons of the 2017-20 revival. There have also been DVD releases of all 11 seasons. (You may want to see if your local library has them.) You can also find the show on Logo TV.

Q: I believe in the late 1950s there was a cartoon called “Diver Dan” in which the cartoon characters had human lips when they talked. I seem to vividly remember a barracuda. What show was this on and am I remembering correctly?

A: Sort of. “Diver Dan” was a series of live-action stories, with a human diver and puppet fish including a barracuda. The human lips device that you remember was in a badly animated show called “Clutch Cargo.” (Conan O’Brien also used the device in sketches.) There are DVDs of both shows. You can also find “Clutch Cargo” episodes on Tubi, Plex and YouTube, and “Diver Dan” on YouTube.

Correction: In a recent column I said the series “Mr. Lucky” originally aired on NBC. It was on CBS.
