With $900-plus 'Othello' tickets, Denzel Washington breaks Broadway box office record

NEW YORK — Denzel Washington‘s big return to Broadway is the hottest ticket in town — but it’s also the costliest one this season.
The two-time Oscar winner leading the cast of the starry revival of Shakespeare’s “Othello” has broken box office records at the Barrymore Theatre in New York City.
The Kenny Leon-helmed production, which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago, generated $2.8 million with eight preview performances. That exceeds a 2023 record set by “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which pulled in more than $2.7 million.
Lead producer Brian Anthony Moreland, whose previous credits include recent revivals of classics such as “The Piano Lesson,” “The Wiz” and “Funny Girl,” is raking in the ducats with orchestra-level advance tickets ranging between $216 and $921.
The pricing is a far mark higher than “The Outsiders,” which won the Best Musical prize at last year’s Tony Awards. Tickets for that critically acclaimed show average a high of $155.02.
“Othello” is reaching the heights of “Hamilton, ” which had tickets going for upwards of $998 during holiday weeks at its peak. Nearly 10 years since its Broadway transfer, the Lin-Manuel Miranda juggernaut remains a top draw on Broadway.
Washington and Gyllenhaal’s run will be far much shorter, though. The 15-week limited engagement ends on June 8 — the same day as The Tony Awards, where it can take in a different type of haul.
“Othello,” with Molly Osborne, Anthony Michael Lopez, Daniel Pearce, Kimber Elayne Sprawl and Tony-winner Andrew Burnap also in the cast, officially opened Sunday night and turned out to be a high wattage affair.
Alongside Jennifer Lopez, Angela Bassett, Martha Stewart, Nia Long, Sam Jackson and Sherri Shepherd, former President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, came to see the updated version of the 4-century-old tragedy in which a Black army general kills his young wife in a jealous rage.
While some drama critics offered the production mixed reviews, the former first lady gave it a thumbs-up; writing in her Instagram story: “Riveting… Brilliant… BRAVO!”
The opening night festivities was the Bidens’ first public outing since leaving the White House in January.
