Television Q&A: Will 'The Big Bang Theory' TV universe be expanding?

You have questions. I have some answers.

Q: I heard a rumor there might be a spinoff from “The Big Bang Theory” in the works. Did you hear anything about that? If so, do you know when and what channel?

A: As you know, “The Big Bang Theory” has inspired two spinoffs, “Young Sheldon” and “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.” Now a third is coming, called “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” for HBO Max. It focuses on comic-book store owner Stuart Bloom (played by Kevin Sussman), his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist Bert (Brian Posehn) and edgy physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). The summary says Stuart “is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. … As the title implies, things don’t go well.” The show also promises “alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from ‘The Big Bang Theory” — and lots of CGI. There’s no premiere date at this writing.

Q: The other day I saw a very good movie, “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid,” with Steve Martin, Rachel Ward and a good-looking young man named Reni Santoni. What happened to him?

A: Santoni had a long career with lots of memorable roles, including Poppie on “Seinfeld,” Harry Callahan’s partner in the first “Dirty Harry” movie and the starring role in the movie “Enter Laughing” (directed by Carl Reiner, who also directed “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid”). He died in 2020, reportedly after a series of health problems; he was 82.

Q: I loved the show "Billions." I had read a while back that the producers were going to do numerous new series —"Millions,” "Trillions" and it seemed like a few others. Do you have any word on the progress of those?

A: There was indeed word a couple of years ago that Showtime planned to expand the “Billions” universe with other shows including “Millions” and “Trillions.” But in March, the Los Angeles Times reported that the spinoff plans had been put aside at Showtime’s company, Paramount. A script for one of the spinoffs “just wasn’t necessarily where we thought we need to go,” one executive told the Times. (More recently that executive, Chris McCarthy, announced his departure from Paramount as it completed a merger with Skydance Media.) The company hasn’t given up on money-and-scheming shows, with the Times saying it is planning a series based on the book “Moneyland.”

Q: There’s a guy I’ve seen in recent Walmart commercials that looks like the actor in the movie “Django Unchained." I don’t know his name but, in the movie, he was a cowboy bad guy. Walton Goggins maybe?

A: That is indeed Walton Goggins in ads for Walmart. And his credits go far beyond “Django Unchained.” He was fantastic in the TV series “The Shield” and “Justified,” for example, and more recently has been in “Fallout” and “The White Lotus.”

Q: In May the BBC showed six episodes of the series “Luther” with Idris Elba. It is one of the best programs I have ever watched. Where can I find the whole series?

A: The whole series of the acclaimed detective drama includes five seasons and a movie, “Luther: The Fallen Sun.” Hulu and Disney+ have the five seasons, and there are DVDs of the episodes. Netflix has “The Fallen Sun.”
