The Fugees' Pras sentencing postponed for emergency colon cancer surgery

Fugees co-founder Pras Michel’s sentencing hearing relating to his 2023 conviction for conspiracy, witness tampering and failing to register as an agent of China was delayed last week amid “emergency surgery for colon cancer removal.”
The 52-year-old Grammy winner, real name Prakazrel Michel, “missed” the scheduled Aug. 29 hearing “while undergoing emergency surgery for colon cancer removal,” his representative, Erica Dumas, told Billboard Monday.
Michel is “recovering right now until he is in the clear and focused on spending time with his family ahead of sentencing,” said Dumas. “He still remains hopeful for his future.”
Michel, who formed the hip hop trio with Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, was convicted in spring 2023 of conspiracy, concealment of material facts, making false entries in records, witness tampering and serving as an unregistered agent of a foreign power. He faced a maximum of 20 years behind bars for the most serious offenses.
Authorities at the time said Michel had “brazenly conspired” with Malaysian billionaire Jho Low to “launder millions of dollars in illegitimate campaign contributions into the 2012 U.S. presidential election” for then-President Barack Obama.
Michel’s charges also stemmed from his illegal attempts in 2017 to influence the Trump administration’s handling of its probe into Low.
Forfeiture was the order of business for Friday’s hearing, which has been rescheduled for Oct. 3, as Michel’s lawyers bristle against the government for seeking nearly $65 million from the musician, per Billboard. His attorneys are also seeking what they say is a “just” 36-month sentence.
