Virginia Madsen says late brother Michael is 'no longer in pain' after son's suicide

Virginia Madsen says her late brother, “Reservoir Dogs” star Michael Madsen, is “no longer in pain” following his death from cardiac arrest last summer.
The 67-year-old Quentin Tarantino collaborator, who had long battled alcoholism, died on July 3, but Virginia told People he “shut down” after the 2022 suicide of his son Hudson.
“It was impossible to talk to my brother about it,” said the Oscar-nominated “Sideways” actress. “He really wasn’t communicating with anybody. … Addiction will do everything it can to separate loved ones from the person who’s suffering.”
Madsen explained that the “Kill Bill” actor, who had seven children, “tried really hard over and over again until he just got farther and farther away. … You lose them while they’re still walking around alive.”
She said her brother’s death ultimately “wasn’t a surprise,” and that she believes he’s “no longer suffering.”
The siblings’ 94-year-old mother also “felt a really strong sense that he was at peace,” added Madsen, whose family has experienced “really intense bonding” following Michael’s death.
The “Candyman” star said the January 2022 death of Hudson, an Army sergeant, triggered “very intense grief” for the family and led her “to honor him” through starring in “Sheepdog,” which shines a light on combat veterans.
“He was on my mind every moment of every day,” Madsen said of Hudson. “I just felt the need for this to be more of a conversation in our country. … I wish [Hudson] could have been home and able to get help.”
