NEW YORK — The stars of “Grey’s Anatomy” alongside actors across Hollywood joined together online to mourn the loss of Eric Dane, who died Thursday afternoon after a battle with ALS. He was 53 years old.

Dane, who was known for playing plastic surgeon Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy,” as well as Cal Jacobs on “Euphoria” and officer Tom Chandler on “The Last Ship,” first revealed his diagnosis in April 2025. His family confirmed the sad news with a statement, revealing Dane “spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

The statement concluded, “Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

The news sparked an outpouring of emotion from his friends and colleagues, including Patrick Dempsey, who starred alongside Dane as Dr. Derek Shepherd on “Grey’s” for six seasons.

“I just woke up this morning and it was very sad to read the news. It’s hard to put into words. I feel really so sad for his children,” Dempsey said on Virgin Radio U.K.’s “The Chris Evans Breakfast Show.”

“I was corresponding with him, we were texting so I spoke to him about a week ago and some friends of ours went in to see him and he was really starting to lose his ability to speak, ” Dempsey added.

The McDreamy to Dane’s McSteamy went on to remember his former co-star as “the funniest man,” who brought “joy” and spirit to their work.

“We hit it off because there was never really any competition,” he noted. “It was just this wonderful mutual respect. He’s wickedly intelligent. I’m always going to remember those moments of fun that we had together and celebrate the joy that he did bring to people’s lives. The real loss is for us who don’t have him anymore.”

Fellow “Grey’s” co-star, Kevin McKidd, who directs in addition to appearing as Dr. Owen Hunt on the long-running medical drama, shared a photo of Dane in scrubs from his time on the show.

“Rest in Peace, buddy,” he wrote.

Another “Grey’s” star, Sarah Drew, reacted by reposting the same image, sharing several crying emojis along with it.

Kim Raver, who plays Dr. Teddy Altman on Grey’s, meanwhile remembered Dane as “a light” who loved his family.

“You’d see it effortlessly shine from him on the set of Grey’s as well as when he was with Rebecca and the girls,” she worte. “During filming he’d get this twinkle in his eye and with a mischievous look, he would deliver with perfect comedic timing, a line of dialogue that would floor you! You will be missed.”

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson said he was “heartbroken” over the loss.

“Working with him was an honor,” Levinson told Variety. “Being his friend was a gift. Eric’s family is in our prayers. May his memory be for a blessing.”

Dane was also remembered by actors John Stamos and Nina Dobrev, who worked with him in “Wedding Wars” and “Redeeming Love,” respectively. Stamos reflected on their time together while Dobrev described Dane as “warm, generous, prepared, and so passionate about what he did,” she wrote. “He led with kindness and made everyone on our set feel seen. ALS is a cruel and unforgiving disease.”

Actor Ashton Kutcher added: “Miss you, buddy. Let’s keep fighting the fight to solve ALS.”
