Bollywood singing legend Asha Bhosle has died aged 92.
The celebrated playback singer passed away in Mumbai on Sunday (12.04.26), having been admitted to hospital after suffering a heart attack.
Asha's son Anand Bhosle told reporters: "My mother passed away today.
"People can pay their last respects to her at Casa Grande, Lower Parel, tomorrow morning."
Bhosle's passing brings an end to an extraordinary career that spanned eight decades and over 12,000 songs.
The star's distinctive voice was featured on a plethora of film soundtracks as actors lip-synced over her tracks and she was even immortalised in Cornershop's 1997 hit Brimful of Asha - which topped the charts in the UK.
Bhosle, who earned international recognition for collaborating with Boy George, earned two National Film Awards, seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award - India's highest honour in cinema - in 2000.
Born in 1933, Asha was introduced to music by her father Dinanath Mangeshkar, a trained singer, and embraced cabaret and Western-influenced melodies to forge a unique artistic identity that stood apart from her older sister Lata Mangeshkar - a legendary singer in her own right known as the 'Melody Queen'.
Tributes to Asha have poured in from across India, with the country's Prime Minister Narendra Modi writing on social media platform X: "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Asha Bhosle, one of India's most renowned and versatile voices. Her unique musical journey spanning decades has enriched our cultural heritage and touched the hearts of countless people around the world. From soulful melodies to spirited compositions, her voice carried a timeless brilliance. I will forever cherish the memories of my conversations with her."
He added: "My heartfelt condolences to her family, fans, and music lovers. She will continue to inspire future generations, and her songs will forever resonate in people's lives."
Singer Harshdeep Kaur hailed the Bollywood icon as "an institution of music"
She wrote: "Asha Bhosle 'The Voice of Love' is no longer with us... Unable to accept this news... just met her last month and took her blessings... her aura as always put me in awe... She was an inspiration.. an institution of music... she will always live with us through her melodious songs."
