Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty "didn't have the capacity or the language" to resolve their differences.

The 54-year-old actress and Shannen - who passed away in July 2024, aged 53 - were co-stars on Beverly Hills, 90210 for years, but Jennie admits that their off-screen relationship was turbulent.

The Hollywood star said on Fox: "We didn't have the capacity or the language at that point.

"Everything was happening so fast. We never really sat down and talked it out. But we were friends and then we would clash and then we were friends.

"We were young. That's what you do when you're growing up and you're in this competitive environment and the script is pitting you against one another, the media, the world, and then it's hard. The lines sometimes get blurred."

Jennie insists she did her best to navigate a difficult situation.

She said: "We were growing and learning the whole time.

"So if you look back at your life and you really zero in on some of the bad things that happened to you and you blame it on other people, it just doesn't work out. But I think we dealt with it the best way we knew how to and it was no bad vibes between us."

Meanwhile, Jennie previously admitted that she regrets her rivalry with Shannen.

The TV star told People: "I think we were both in the same position, really thrust into the spotlight, and we were written as characters to be against each other. That translated into the media and into the audience and then into the world's perception of our relationship.

"And that, in turn, was confusing for both of us, I think."

Jennie also said that the rivalry was fuelled from outside.

The actress shared: "It really dawned on me it wasn't just us. This energy was coming at us from everywhere and pitting us against each other."
