Be the Groundhog

Holiday Mathis on

One thing we learn from the mascot of Groundhog Day, our fearless Punxsutawney Phil, the Seer of Seers, the Prognosticator of Prognosticators, the Weather Prophet Extraordinaire, is that it helps to have a cool name. Also, our reaction to our own shadow self can have implications in the larger world. Under the Aries moon, we each decide for ourselves when to step into the light.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Life is always guiding you toward balance. When you lean too far into extremes -- whether pride or self-criticism -- forces show up to bring you back to center. Balance isn't about choosing sides; it's about harmonizing the opposites.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Emotions will emerge to guide you. Fear reminds you you're not in control; anger points to attachments; sadness reflects a belief in lack. Allow all messengers to move through you as agents of healing.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Productivity depends on your ability to focus on what matters. Distinguish between pursuits within your control and beyond it. If a problem isn't yours to solve, to do so would be a robbery for the person who needs the accomplishment or lesson.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). You thrive when you're busy, but there's a limit to how much you can do without causing yourself the sort of stress that nullifies the efforts. In the interest of self-compassion, consider renegotiating deadlines, trimming your to-do list and/or delegating tasks.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Whether offering praise or receiving it, acknowledgment can feel like a test of social grace. Sentiments can so easily topple into the realm of too much or too little. The important thing isn't to get it perfect but to connect -- to see and be seen.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Cry if you need to. It's a reset button for the soul. Dance for no reason. It's a spell for joy. Make someone laugh. Laughter is how people say, "I see you. I feel you." Express yourself. One act of expression is enough to shift a world.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Simplicity is attainable. You'll surrender a comfort to obtain the greater gift, and in doing so find that you're much more comfortable in your new position of minimalism.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). The best persuasion is barely felt, as soft and consistent as water carving the landscape as it laps at the shore. Relationships will be shaped by consistent efforts repeated over long periods of time.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Clarity of mind will come when the stress is reduced and your freedoms are expanded. In other words, you'll have your best thinking time when the bell rings for recess.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Trouble manifesting? Reflect on your relationship with your circumstances. It would be easy to overestimate your influence. Don't fight uncontrollable forces; study them instead. This way, you learn how to either use or avoid them.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). It's not about what you do; it's about the consciousness you bring to life. You're moving from self-actualization to self-realization. Your mindset shifts to less doing and more being.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Your mentors considered you, in some ways, to be their teacher. This is how you know you have chosen excellent guides. It's also why you should not hesitate to ask for the help you need. It also helps others.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Feb. 2). Welcome to your year of rich purpose. Your passion project becomes a bigger part of your life and has a transforming influence. More highlights: Wise choices sparkle up your personal life. You'll have the approval of someone older and the adoration of someone younger. An investment brings quick money and long-term satisfaction. Taurus and Scorpio adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 9, 19, 3, 5 and 38.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: Aquarius icon Shakira exudes the progressive, forward-thinking energy of an Aquarius, whether it's addressing heartbreak through music or adapting her career to new platforms. Shakira recently partnered with NBC's "Dancing with Myself" as a judge. Her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador continues to shine a light on important humanitarian causes.
