How Not to Light a Candle

Holiday Mathis on

Over a dozen aspects today tempt us to light both ends of a candle. But no one makes holders for that. How do you set it down without catching other things on fire? In a related story, a culture that equates busyness with goodness makes it feel psychologically disagreeable to relax. But the body needs it. And the body tends to win. It will find a way to get what it needs.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Phrases like "self-care," "manifest abundance" or "be mindful" lose potency from over-use, and you're right to be desensitized to anything that doesn't work for you. A disruption will wake your mind back up and let real insight in again.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Something may be temporarily blocking you from feeling hope. But the trajectory is still there. The load you're carrying is not permanent. You don't have to feel hopeful for hope to still be true.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You're not expecting any person or experience to guarantee your happiness. This takes pressure off everything and everyone, including yourself. There's simply no need to demand joy; all you have to do is notice it.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Knowing that groups get tedious if the same people, places and things are always involved, you'll change it up with new configurations. Your true genius is in doing this without causing anyone to feel excluded.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Environments act like mirrors, reflecting and awakening different aspects of your personality. You can use this today to change your mood when you want to. It's about transportation. Go to the next place and you'll feel a different way.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). People don't always think before they speak, and you've been on both sides of that equation. It's what makes you overlook the little slights and opinions and slips, regardless of where they come from, and that tendency is much to your benefit.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). It's a story as old as time. Someone handles the work; someone else takes the credit. When you see this dynamic, it reminds you that power moves are necessary to keep the spirit of peace and justice alive.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Ancient Greek philosophers defined passion as an emotion based on a false sense of reality -- a delusion. Then again, entire civilizations have been built on delusions. Today, don't judge it; just go.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Strategy and skill matter less than your energy. If you approach something with warmth, openness and a genuine intention to enjoy people, that energy gets mirrored back. People cooperate; things go smoothly.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). When you feel in control of your daily life, you also feel healthy and vibrant. There are many things you can't control, and that's why it's so important to acknowledge the hundreds of small decisions you can completely take charge of.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You can't change the past, but you can change the way you tell the story, or even the way you think about it. The truth has many facets. Why not focus on the one most helpful to you?

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Your silence or neutrality will be more respectful than advice. To hand someone the solution too quickly could deprive them of the process that would teach them more.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Nov. 6). Welcome to your Year of the Open Door. Opportunities arrive by invitation, not hustle. Work feels charmed when you're asked into rooms you once thought off-limits. Love comes knocking, too, and at the most opportune time. More highlights: Moving or renovating your home will make daily life smoother and more lovely. You'll turn a casual skill into money. A once-tricky relationship proves useful. Aquarius and Cancer adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 32, 1, 19, 30 and 44.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: In another astrologically astute release for Emma Stone but a few days from her solar return, "Bugonia" features the Scorpio star as a CEO kidnapped by conspiracy theorists who believe she's an alien intent on destroying planet earth. Whether playing a comic role like in "Easy A" or delivering an Oscar-winning performance in "La La Land," Stone's powers of transformation and magnetism make her one of the most compelling actors of her generation.
