Is it acceptable for liberal historians to paint American heritage as a lie?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: It is interesting to note that not only are liberal historians trying to paint American heritage as a lie as they seek to rewrite history the way they want it to be, but even radio talk show hosts are trying to dismantle the heritage of our faith and the strength that it gave the early settlers of this nation. I’ve even heard horrible things said about the Puritans – things I’ve never heard before that certainly taint young minds who know nothing about the trials they endured for the faith. This is purely deceit, but they are getting away with it. – D.H.

A: The great 18 th-century American preacher Jonathan Edwards wrote this about the Puritans who settled in America: “The practice of religion is not only their business at certain seasons, but the business of their lives.”

The Puritans were ready to order their personal life, worship, church, business affairs, political views, and even recreation according to the Bible’s commandments. What a contrast between the conduct of those earlier Christians and the permissiveness of our day!

Millions today want instant gratification. The whole world seems bent on pleasure, and there’s an alarming preoccupation with self. When nations or individuals live only for pleasure, they begin to die morally and spiritually, oblivious to God’s will and scornful of His judgment. The Puritans knew that the life of faith was a struggle. They knew, too, that sin is a stubborn reality and that believers are not immune to affliction, poverty, and suffering. Still, they persevered in their faith. Like these our spiritual forefathers, may it be said of us that our faith is “the business of [our] lives.” We must hold to the faith and not retreat!
