Shouldn’t Christians have enough sense to make decisions about the normal things in life?

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: Where in the Bible does it say to pray about everything? I don’t see this demonstrated in Scripture. Shouldn’t Christians have enough sense to make decisions about the normal things in life? – P.O.

A: The Bible says, “In everything by prayer … with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6, NKJV), and this is accomplished through prayer. This distinction can be achieved only by a close walk with Christ, by constant prayer, and by seeking the Holy Spirit’s leadership every hour of the day.

Jesus prayed at funerals. He prayed over the five loaves and two fish. He prayed when He was in a crowd, when He was with His disciples, when He was alone in the garden. He prayed at night, during the early morning hours, and throughout the day. Jesus Himself gave us the pattern for prayer (see Luke 11).

Do we pray in reverence to God the Father? Do we tell Him we live anticipating His return? Do we thank Him for sending His Son, Jesus, to save us? Do we thank Him for the food and water He provides? Do we ask Him to protect our hearts and minds from the world’s evil and the wiles of the devil? Do we trust Him with every moment of life? Do we express to Him our devotion and commit to Him our time in the study of His Word?

Prayer is fellowship with God. Many people call on God in prayer when they find themselves in danger. Sadly, few pray during times of prosperity, security, and freedom. This is the most critical time to pray so we do not become selfish, arrogant, and captivated by the way of the world. We should thank Him every day for the wonderful and precious gift of Himself. “We will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4, NKJV).
