How do I become more like Jesus?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: I wish I could see things from God’s eyes instead of mine. I feel like I concentrate more on trying to be good than being good. How do I become more like Jesus? – G.P.
A: Those who have flown in an airplane know that planet Earth looks much different from high in the air than from the ground. Perspective changes. Pictures taken from the moon and from space have an even different perspective.
God wants to give us a different perspective. As we look to God, instead of seeing only ourselves and our problems, our perspective changes.
When we have difficulties in relationships, we tend to look at problems only through our eyes. With God, He sees the full picture and He knows what we need. He sees the present, and He knows the future. He wants us to see our problems from His perspective. How does this happen? By reading and studying the Word of God. The Spirit of God takes the Word of God and makes the child of God.
As King David declared: “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me” (Psalm 138:8, NKJV).
He wants us to look upward, not inward. We must not get bogged down; rather, we must keep our eyes on Jesus. The Bible teaches us to be more concerned about the needs and feelings of others than our own. We are to encourage and build up others – our family, our friends, and associates – and God will help us do this.
When someone desires to become a great athlete, he or she practices and learns from those who have excelled in that area. When we desire to be more like Jesus, every area of our lives should come under the lordship of Jesus Christ. And that means the searchlight of God’s Word must penetrate every corner of our lives, and He will strengthen us to learn from Him and apply His truth to our lives.
