Has God has a spark of Himself in the human heart?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: It’s interesting to engage people on the subject of God. Most people jump to the conclusion that I want to convert them to my faith of Christianity, but when I start asking questions to them about their beliefs, most people don’t have any, or at least can’t seem to sort them out. I’ve found that once they have a chance to vent their frustration on the subject, they’re more intrigued to listen to my thoughts. Isn’t it true that God has put a spark of Himself down in the human heart? – P.B.

A: Some years ago, a state governor exclaimed during a private conversation, “I’m at the end of my rope. I need God.” A young man, toughened in the Green Berets, fell upon the floor of his room one night, weeping like a helpless child, “God, where are You?” People from all walks of life wonder how to find God.

A remarkable fact for all seekers of God is that belief in some kind of God is practically universal. Whatever period of history we study, whatever culture we examine, if we look back in time, we see all peoples, primitive or modern, acknowledging some kind of deity.

During the past two centuries, archaeology has unearthed the ruins of many ancient civilizations, but none has ever been found that did not yield some evidence of a god who was worshiped. People have worshiped the sun and carved idols. They’ve worshiped a set of rules, animals, and some seem to worship themselves. People make gods out of their imaginations; others give up the pursuit of God in frustration, professing to be irreligious.

The Bible says clearly that God has put eternity into the heart of man (see Ecclesiastes 3:11) and that His laws are written on their hearts (see Romans 2:14–15). The Bible provides all the answers to mankind’s dilemmas.
