Gadgets: A rugged smartphone

Published in Science & Technology News

It's not a question of whether you will drop your smartphone, but rather when it will happen. The 8849 Tech Tank 3 Pro Ultimate 5G rugged smartphone is designed to withstand such drops, among many other features, making it one of the most durable and versatile smartphones on the market.

First and foremost, it is a cell phone that works with T-Mobile and Verizon networks. While that's great, as a company representative pointed out on my initial introduction to the Tank 3 Pro, it packs endless and incredible technology under the hood. 8849 is known for its rugged devices, and the Tank 3 Pro’s features range from calls to incredible battery power and a built-in portable projector.

With its IP68 water-, dust- and shock-resistance rating, you won't need another case. This rating indicates it will withstand being in fresh water for up to 30 minutes at a depth of up to 60 inches. The protection provided is needed for what's inside, which includes a 100-lumen 120Hz DLP projector with adjustable focus and a powerful Dimensity 8200 processor.

The projector is ready to project photos and movies anytime, anywhere. It features auto keystone correction, ensuring the projected image is lined up correctly for viewing. With its highly efficient processor and high-capacity battery, the Tank 3 Pro can play for hours. The USB-C charging 23,800 mAh battery is rated for up to 118 hours of calls and 48 hours of video playback, and functions as a power bank to supply output power for charging other devices.

The Tank 3 Pro runs on Android 14, with Bluetooth 5.3, and has a 6.79-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 2460 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. With all it does, overheating isn't a problem; a built-in cooling fan dissipates heat.

RAM is expandable up to 36 GB, with the standard being 16 or 18 GB. Both models feature 512 GB of memory, with 2 TB of expansion available.

The rear AI camera features a wide-angle and telephoto lens, offering a resolution of up to 200 megapixels and 64 megapixel night vision. The front camera is 50 megapixels. It features facial recognition technology and sensors for various functions, including fingerprint recognition, a G-Sensor, a compass, and a gyroscope. The device features built-in speakers, a 3.5mm aux-out port, and an FM radio.

The Tank 3 Pro is a WiFi hotspot with a 4-in-1 navigation system combining local GPS, Glonass (a Russian satellite-based navigation system), BeiDou (a Chinese satellite navigation system) and Galileo (a global navigation satellite system developed by the European Union).

There's also a multi-use tool kit, a camping light with adjustable brightness and an emergency warning light.

The Gooloo GT6000 is an all-in-one portable battery capable of charging everything from laptops to jump-starting a car.

Fortunately, I didn't have a dead car battery to test this on, but with its included jumper cables, it can start up 12-volt vehicles, boasting a 6000A peak current. It's listed to work with all gas and 12-liter diesel engine capacities. For other charging, simply use the built-in USB ports connected to the 27,000 mAh high-capacity battery.

The USB-C port supports charging the Gooloo GT6000 and delivers up to 100 watts of power. USB-A (1) supplies up to 18 watts, and USB-A (2) has a 5-volt, 1.4-amp output. The DC output is listed as 15V/10A, with a maximum output of 150W. There are 10 innovative safety features, including overcharge, high and low temperature overload, and reverse polarity protection.

To start a 12-volt vehicle with the included jumper cables, ensure the battery is charged, then connect the red cable to the positive terminal and the black cable to the negative terminal, and finally start the vehicle. A 3.2-inch LED display provides real-time updates on all essential features, including battery status and reverse clip warnings.

There's also a built-in 400-lumen LED flashlight with safety modes, including SOS, strobe and steady light. The portable battery will hold its charge for up to two years.
