More than 900 flights were delayed Wednesday at Denver International Airport as a winter storm dumped several inches of snow on the metro area.

As of 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, 939 flights at DIA were delayed and 11 were canceled, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.

Flights headed in and out of DIA were being delayed by an average of 30 minutes at that time because of winter weather, including the need to deice departing planes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Ground stops and ground delays started at 7 a.m. continued throughout the day, including a ground stop as of 6:45 p.m. for deicing, according to the FAA.

More ground stops and delays are likely until 8 p.m. Wednesday, federal officials said.

United delayed 323 flights on Wednesday, followed by 276 from Southwest, 231 from SkyWest, 29 from American Airlines, 25 from Frontier and 26 from Delta.

SkyWest canceled nine flights on Wednesday, and Southwest and United each canceled one flight.
