Thousands lose power in New Jersey as winter storm strikes
Published in Weather News
About 6,000 people throughout New Jersey were without power Sunday as the winter storm dumped nearly a foot of snow throughout the state.
Jersey Central Power and Light reported more than 5,980 power outages in Ocean County, with about 100 more scattered throughout its service area.
Snowfall in Ocean County was on par with the rest of the state, with Bayside receiving 8 inches of snow to lead the area. It was not immediately clear what led to the spike of power outages in the state.
Though New York, New Jersey and Connecticut all received hefty helpings of snow — including 9 inches in Leonia and North Caldwell, N.J., and 7.2 inches in Central Park — power outages throughout the region were limited. Connecticut saw only scattered reports of outages.
Others throughout the country were not as lucky. Tennessee led the nation with more than 300,000 power outages, according to online tracker Poweroutage.us. In Davidson County, which includes Nashville, nearly 90% of customers didn’t have electricity.
There were also more than 100,000 people without power in Louisiana and Mississippi, which were dealing with extremely rare ice accumulation that wreaked havoc on utility companies.
Though subways and buses continued operating in New York, with delays, there were multiple reports of car accidents throughout New Jersey. No deaths were reported in the wrecks, but five deaths inside the five boroughs were blamed on the ice-cold weather that arrived shortly before the snow.
