Editorial: Many public officials feel unsafe right now

Published in Op Eds

Some irresponsible right-wing influencer was wandering past the home of one of our public officials recently, just taking a little walk, in his parlance, and making a video for X and doubtless also for other socials. He popped up in our feed with his creepy and menacing stroll. We wish he’d stroll out of town.

We appreciate that people in democracies have the right to protest outside of politicians’ residences and we’ve seen it happen at the abodes of numerous Chicago mayors, to name but one set of examples. But we’ve never been fans of the practice, especially when those in the public eye have family members there.

We’re especially not fans of the practice right now. Obviously, there is an elevated threat environment in this nation. Things badly need to calm back down.

More than one public official has told us over the last few days of their increased wariness when out and about, and this sense of unease extends to media figures, especially those who offer commentary in the political realm; it’s worth remembering that the late Charlie Kirk had not been elected to any public office and was best described as an influencer himself. It made him a target.

Some talking heads have said the most stupid things in the last 72 hours, reminding us that not having a take or a “view,” other than decrying gun violence and offering empathy for family members, often is the best take of all.

The universe of people with something useful to add is far smaller than the universe of those who add something anyway.

No wonder many of those whose job it is to serve the public interest feel unsafe.

We asked Chicago police Superintendent Larry Snelling Friday about this situation and he told us the Chicago Police Department understands the current concerns and has upped its efforts to monitor threats against elected officials and move immediately against any they find credible.

Good.
