A group founded by progressive activist David Hogg endorsed Lauren Babb Tomlinson in the race for an open Sacramento-area congressional seat.

Hogg earlier this year served a brief tenure as DNC vice chair that was cut short following backlash after he called for primary challenges against Democrats he accused of being “asleep at the wheel.”

He founded Leaders We Deserve to support young and progressive Democrats in races around the country.

The 25-year-old Parkland school shooting survivor cited Babb Tomlinson’s work as chief public affairs officer for Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, which covers clinics in Northern California and Nevada, along with her working class-focused platform.

Babb Tomlinson, a 33-year-old and new mother, has made affordability and health care access some of her top issues since she launched her campaign for the redrawn 6th Congressional District last month.

“Lauren isn’t just running against Trump. As a young working mom, she lives the struggles California families face: grocery bills that seem to increase every week, mind-bogglingly expensive child care, appalling home prices, and a crumbling health care system,” Hogg said in a statement.

“In Congress, Lauren will fight for a bold agenda where every American can access affordable child care, quality eldercare and housing. From protecting abortion rights to delivering health care to her community, Lauren won’t back down from tough challenges.”

Babb Tomlinson said she was “honored” by the endorsement. “We need leaders who understand these challenges firsthand and who will fight relentlessly for a better, more affordable future,” she added.

Following the passage of Proposition 50, which redrew California’s congressional map, the 6th District covers West Sacramento, Sacramento’s Natomas and Arden neighborhoods, as well as Citrus Heights and part of Roseville.

The seat is open after incumbent Rep. Ami Bera, D-Elk Grove, announced he would run in the 3rd District.

Former state Sen. Richard Pan and Sacramento District Attorney Thien Ho, both Democrats, are also running for the seat, which has a 9-point Democratic registration advantage after Prop. 50.

On Monday, Sacramento Sheriff Jim Cooper endorsed Ho in the race.
