Rays bounce back to beat Twins in team effort

TAMPA, Fla. — All it took for the Rays to get back on track Wednesday was a dazzling six-inning start by Drew Rasmussen and home runs from Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero.

The resulting 5-0 win over the MinnesotaTwins provided a proper rebound for the Rays from Tuesday’s loss that snapped their six-game winning streak.

They climbed back over .500 at 28-27, won a third straight series and improved to 9-4 over their last 13 games and 9-3 in their last 12 at Steinbrenner Field, where a few weeks ago they were immersed in a 1-11 struggle.

Announced attendance was a season-low 8,372 .

Rasmussen allowed a leadoff single to Trevor Larnach — his good friend and former teammate at Oregon State — and no other hits over his six dominant innings, striking out five while permitting just one walk and one hit batter.

It was his third straight scoreless start (with a streak of 18 scoreless innings) and the third straight start he won, which he had done only once previously in his career.

Relievers Edwin Uceta, Mason Montgomery and Connor Seabold took it from there. It was the season-high sixth straight game in which Rays pitchers allowed three or fewer earned runs.

Rasmussen also got some help from the defense, as has been the case pretty much daily during their run of improved play.

The Rays took a 3-0 lead in the fourth off Twins starter Pablo Lopez.

Red-hot Brandon Lowe got them started with a leadoff homer, his sixth in his last 13 games. In doing so, he also extended his hitting steak to 11 games, one shy of his career high.

An out later, Jonathan Aranda singled. Then Caminero, who was dealing with a leg issue after a diving play to end Minnesota’s fourth, made it easy on himself by crushing a two-run homer and jogging around the bases. It was Caminero’s 10th homer of the season.

The Rays added a run in the fifth, though they first ran into an out. Josh Lowe singled, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on an infield out. But he got caught between third and home when Yandy Diaz hit a comebacker to Lopez.

Diaz got to second on the play, however, and scored on a single by Aranda, who notched his 30th RBI.

The Rays made it 5-0 in the eighth when they had Aranda on third and Chandler Simpson on first and Twins reliever Kody Funderburk was called for a balk.
