Skubal throws seven shutout innings, Tigers beat White Sox

DETROIT — That’s more like it.
After losing the series opener to the Chicago White Sox in somewhat dispiriting fashion Friday night, the Detroit Tigers leaned on their ace to restore some order Saturday.
And lefty Tarik Skubal, facing the South Siders for the first time this year, took care of business.
He blanked the White Sox over seven innings and the Tigers breezed to a 6-0 victory before a crowd of 32,115 at Comerica Park. The loss ends Chicago's six-game winning streak.
It was also the Tigers' 16th shutout of the season, tying the Pittsburgh Pirates for the most in the major leagues.
Skubal, with his 12th scoreless start of at least six innings this season, padded the franchise record he established in his previous start.
He was in complete control, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts. He faced the minimum 12 hitters through four innings, the first hit coming on a two-out, bloop double to left by Bryan Ramos in the fifth.
It was his 13th pitcher win and he lowered his American League-best ERA to 2.10.
With the win, the Tigers will at least maintain their 8.5-game lead over the Royals in the Central Division.
Skubal worked with little room for error through the first four innings before the Tigers hitters were finally rewarded for their patience against White Sox lefty starter Martin Perez.
Jahmai Jones set the tone, smashing Perez’s second pitch into the bullpen in left field. It was the second time in five games Jones led off the Tigers’ half of the first inning with a dinger.
And the hard hits kept coming. Just not the damage. At least not at first. Riley Greene hit a ball 414 feet that was caught at the wall in center. Andy Ibanez hit one to the wall in right-center that was caught.
Dillon Dingler hit one into the triangle in right-center that was caught.
The ball in play gods evened things up for the Tigers in the fourth. An infield single by Greene, a walk to Ibanez, a bloop, RBI double by Zach McKinstry and a sacrifice fly by Javier Báez made it 3-0.
Then, the kill shot: Gleyber Torres launched his 15 th homer of the season, a two-out, three-run blast to left, capping the five-run fourth inning.
Skubal came into the game leading the American League in 13 different pitcher categories and he only strengthened his bid to be the first American League pitcher to win back to back Cy Young Awards since Pedro Martinez.
The Tigers will send veteran Charlie Morton to the mound Sunday afternoon in the rubber match.
