Seahawks working to bring back safety Quandre Diggs

SEATTLE — The Seahawks appear close to a reunion with safety Quandre Diggs to help shore up an injury-riddled position, a source confirmed to The Seattle Times.

If Diggs signs, it is expected that it will be to the practice squad.

Diggs foreshadowed the move Tuesday morning with a post on the social media platform X with a picture of Seahawks mascot Blitz and a child and song lyrics stating “Tell the world I’m coming home.” The post was captioned “No sources needed just my guy @BlitzTheSeahawk.” ESPN first reported that if Diggs signs it would be to the practice squad.

The signing had not officially happened as of late Tuesday afternoon, and the Seahawks could wait until Wednesday to finalize the deal.

Bringing back Diggs to help fill out a spot where the Seahawks have just three healthy players appears to be one of several moves afoot as they waived cornerback Derion Kendrick on Tuesday afternoon.

That means the Seahawks have two open spots on their 53-man roster, creating one Saturday when receiver Tory Horton was placed on injured reserve.

Those spots could potentially go to players on the practice squad to help fill out spots where depth may be needed.

Diggs played for the Seahawks from 2019-23, earning three Pro Bowl nods, before being released in March 2024 in a salary cap-related move.

He signed with Tennessee that summer and started eight games for the Titans in 2024 before suffering a Lisfranc injury and missing the rest of the season.

He returned to play in nine games this season for Tennessee with four starts before asking for and being granted his release on Nov. 7 with the Titans in the midst of a 1-10 season.

The Seahawks are down to just three healthy safeties as they begin their week of preparation for Sunday’s game against Minnesota at Lumen Field.

Starting safety Julian Love has played just three games this season while dealing with a hamstring injury and it’s unclear when he will return.

Coach Mike Macdonald said Monday that the team is “still working through Julian’s situation” to see when he will be designated as returning to practice. Love has not played since Sept. 25 at Arizona.

Ty Okada, who has been filling in for Love working alongside Coby Bryant at safety, suffered an oblique injury Sunday.

Macdonald said Monday that Okada may have to go on injured reserve, though it’s not clear if he will. Macdonald said the team was still waiting for test results on Okada and two other players injured in Sunday’s 30-24 win over the Titans (running back George Holani and linebacker Chazz Surratt) to have more clarity on the seriousness of their injuries.

Holani and Surratt may have to go on IR, Macdonald said, which would create further roster moves.

Okada missing any time would leave the Seahawks with only safeties Bryant, D’Anthony Bell and Nick Emmanwori on their 53-man roster. Emmanwori has been used mostly as a nickel corner, and the Seahawks may prefer that he stay in a role as he has played well since returning to health in early October.

Bell has seven starts with Cleveland from 2022-24 and saw some regular time when Emmanwori was sidelined but has played just 85 snaps overall this season, 42 on Sunday.

The Seahawks have only one safety on the practice squad in undrafted rookie Maxen Hook, who signed on Oct. 9 and has not played in an NFL game. Bringing back Diggs gives them not only a player who can help out immediately but also a veteran presence well known to most at the VMAC and to many players on the roster.

Noting the team’s sudden lack of depth at safety, Macdonald on Monday hinted that a move might be coming, saying: “Yeah, we’re just going to play with one safety and put everybody else in the box. Just kidding. I don’t know. We’ll have to figure something out.”

Diggs, 32, made 30 tackles for the Titans this season in playing 328 snaps. He had a 66.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, 39th of 94 safeties, including a 64.4 coverage grade, 35th of 94 safeties.

Diggs played in 72 games in four full seasons and part of a fifth after being acquired midway through the 2019 campaign in a trade with Detroit.

Diggs was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and named a defensive team captain in 2022 and 2023 in a vote of teammates.

Kendrick, 25, was claimed off waivers from the Rams on Aug. 27 following the cutdown of rosters to 53.

Kendrick has played in 10 games and saw substantial action in games in Weeks 2-3 — wins over the Steelers and Saints — as a nickel corner when Devon Witherspoon and Emmanwori were sidelined. He got interceptions in both games.

His playing time has decreased since. He has 123 snaps for the season but just five snaps on defense in the last five games in which he’s played, with most of his time instead on special teams (he was inactive against the Commanders).

The Seahawks may be hoping that Kendrick clears waivers and can re-sign to the practice squad.

Unlike earlier in the year when the Seahawks cut veteran players such as Cody White and Shaquill Griffin and immediately re-signed them, they can no longer do that now that it is past the trading deadline. From that point forward, all players must go through waivers and can be claimed by any team.

Despite waiving Kendrick, the Seahawks remain deep at cornerback, especially after not dealing Riq Woolen at the trade deadline.

The have Witherspoon, Woolen, Josh Jobe and Nehemiah Pritchett on the 53-man roster and Shaquill Griffin, Tyler Hall and Shemar Jean-Charles on the practice squad.
