Steelers place Broderick Jones on IR, elevate CB Asante Samuel Jr. to active roster

PITTSBURGH — Left tackle Broderick Jones’ season might be over after the Pittsburgh Steelers placed him on injured reserve Saturday.
Jones injured his neck in the 31-28 loss to Chicago last week. Jones must spend a minimum of four games on IR, so the earliest he could return is for the Dec. 28 game at Cleveland in Week 17. The regular season ends the following week with a home game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Steelers made the decision on Friday to start veteran Andrus Peat at left tackle against the Buffalo Bills. Calvin Anderson replaced Jones in the Chicago game, but coach Mike Tomlin staged a competition during the week between Anderson and Peat to see who would start.
It will be Peat’s second start of the season. He started at left guard earlier in the season when Isaac Seumalo was injured.
Jones’ injury was originally reported as a stinger during the game against the Bears, but it was clear by Tuesday the injury was more serious when Tomlin ruled him out for the Bills game at his weekly news conference.
In addition to placing Jones on IR, the Steelers elevated cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game. Joey Porter Jr. has a hip flexor injury, and Samuel, who was signed to the practice squad earlier this month, is expected to be in the corner rotation against the Bills.
