Fantasy football Week 14: Add and drop

Eddie Brown, The San Diego Union-Tribune on

Published in Football

Each week I’ll list the best widely available free agents for fantasy football — I define “widely available” as being owned in around half of all ESPN or Yahoo leagues — and some guys who are probably better off in the free-agent pool than collecting dust on your roster.

Follow me on X (formerly known as Twitter) @UTEddieBrown if you have questions throughout the week.

Here’s my NFL Week 14 waiver wire cheat sheet for all league sizes and formats, with players you need to add, drop and stream in your fantasy football league:

ADD

— WR Isaac TeSlaa, Lions (ESPN: 1%; Yahoo: 1%): Amon-Ra St. Brown suffered a low ankle sprain early in a loss to the Packers on Thanksgiving. With St. Brown’s injury and Kalif Raymond already out (ankle), TeSlaa played a season-high 92.1% of Detroit’s offensive snaps. The rookie playmaker caught both of his targets for 35 yards and a touchdown. Three of his six receptions this season have resulted in a TD. Both St. Brown and Raymond are unlikely to play on Thursday night against the Cowboys, who have allowed the most fantasy points to wide receivers so far. Both Tom Kennedy (ESPN:

— RB Devin Singletary, Giants (ESPN: 29%; Yahoo: 22%): Singletary finished with 102 total yards and a TD in a loss at New England on Monday night. Tyrone Tracy had to be helped off the field early in the fourth quarter and was eventually carted back to the locker room with a hip injury. Singletary is the overall RB11 in standard formats (RB15 in PPR) since Week 11 with at least 44 rushing yards in each game and three total TDs.

— WR Jayden Higgins, Texans (ESPN: 36%; Yahoo: 35%): Higgins is the overall WR25 across most fantasy formats since Week 8 with at least four receptions for 55 yards or a touchdown in five of the last six games. The rookie also has at least five targets in five of the six.

— QB Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars (ESPN: 34%; Yahoo: 52%): Lawrence is the overall QB8 since Week 5 with multiple TDs in six of the last eight games. Since Week 9, he’s the overall QB6 with at least 25 rushing yards or a rushing TD in five straight games.

— TE Dalton Schultz, Texans (ESPN: 52%; Yahoo: 46%): Schultz is the overall TE13 in standard formats (TE5 in PPR) since Week 7. He has at least five receptions in eight of his last 10 games, and at least eight targets in five of his last seven.

— WR Chris Godwin, Buccaneers (ESPN: 59%; Yahoo: 55%): Godwin looked close to his old self and led Tampa Bay with 78 receiving yards in a victory over the Cardinals.

— TE Darren Waller, Dolphins (ESPN: 20%; Yahoo: 30%): Waller was the overall TE4 in standard formats (WR5 in PPR) in the three games he both started and finished before he suffered a pectoral injury. He had 47 yards on two receptions against the Saints in his return. Waller has two premium matchups against the Steelers and Bengals in the first two rounds of the fantasy playoffs.

— WR Kayshon Boutte, Patriots (ESPN: 31%; Yahoo: 33%): Drake Maye has proven to be one of the best deep ball throwers in the NFL and Boutte is his favorite target downfield, on top of being one Maye’s favorites in the red zone as well. He had four receptions for 35 yards and a TD against the Giants on Monday night. Boutte has at least one TD in four of the last five games he’s started and finished.

— QB Tyrod Taylor, Jets (ESPN: 5%; Yahoo: 4%): Taylor has finished as the weekly QB17 and QB7 in his last two starts since replacing Justin Fields under center. The veteran’s next two matchups are against the Dolphins and Jaguars. Both teams are in the bottom 10 of the league at preventing fantasy points to quarterbacks.

— WR Adonai Mitchell, Jets (ESPN: 3%; Yahoo: 3%): Mitchell finally got open AND caught the ball, finishing with eight receptions for 102 yards and a TD on 12 targets against the Falcons. He has at least six targets in all three of his games since being traded to New York. The Jets are invested in Mitchell’s success after including him in the deal for Sauce Gardner, so I don’t anticipate the usage will falter down the stretch.

— TE Brenton Strange, Jaguars (ESPN: 22%; Yahoo: 32%): Strange returned from a hip injury after missing five games, and had five receptions on five targets for 93 yards in Jacksonville’s overtime victory at Arizona, finishing as the weekly TE4 across most fantasy formats. Strange followed that up with three receptions for 45 yards and a TD against the Titans on Sunday, finishing as the weekly TE4 in standard (TE7 in PPR).

— RB Blake Corum, Rams (ESPN: 13%; Yahoo: 16%): Coach Sean McVay said he wanted a 65/35 snap split between Kyren Williams and Corum, and McVay has been true to his word. Corum had his best game of the season in the loss at Carolina, running for 81 yards and a TD on seven carries. He has five games this year with at least 53 yards or a TD. If you have Williams, you should definitely roster Corum as well. Otherwise, he’s a stash with significant upside if something happens to Williams.

— TE Isaiah Likely, Ravens (ESPN: 8%; Yahoo: 5%): I’ve been advocating to stash Likely the last few weeks because of his premium upcoming schedule. Well, he had five receptions for 95 yards in his first game against the Bengals on Thanksgiving. Don’t worry though. If you missed out, he has another matchup with Cincinnati in two weeks. Likely’s next three games are against teams in the bottom 12 of the league at preventing fantasy points to tight ends.

— QB Tyler Shough, Saints (ESPN: 5%; Yahoo: 7%): Shough finished as Week 13’s QB12 with 239 passing yards and two TDs against the Dolphins on Sunday. He finished as a QB1 for the second time in his last three starts. Shough is a solid streaming option against the Buccaneers this week. Tampa Bay has allowed the third-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season, and the most since Week 10.

— RB Chris Rodriguez, Commanders (ESPN: 12%; Yahoo: 24%): Rodriguez is still in a timeshare with Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Jeremy McNichols, but he’s been the primary ball-carrier recently, especially at the goal-line. Rodriguez has at least 11 carries in three of his last four games, and a TD in four of his last six.

— D/ST Chiefs (ESPN: 21%; Yahoo: 42%): Streaming Kansas City’s defense against the Texans this week is a bet on Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo against a suspect offensive line in a de facto playoff game at home.

— D/ST Buccaneers (ESPN: 23%; Yahoo: 29%): Tampa Bay won’t face a single scary offense for the rest of this fantasy season. The Bucs host the Saints and Falcons, and will face the Panthers and Dolphins on the road. All four teams are in the bottom half of the league at preventing fantasy points to opposing defenses.

— D/ST Commanders (ESPN: 3%; Yahoo: 5%): Target the Vikings when streaming defenses the way we’ve targeted the Titans all season long. It doesn’t matter if it’s J.J. McCarthy or Max Brosmer under center for Minnesota.

— D/ST Saints (ESPN: 5%; Yahoo: 7%): It makes sense to stash New Orleans’ defense if you’re already focused on the playoffs. The Saints face the Panthers, Jets and Titans in Weeks 15-17, three teams in the bottom 10 of the league at preventing fantasy points to opposing defenses.

— D/ST Giants (ESPN: 7%; Yahoo: 3%): Speaking of favorable schedules during the fantasy playoffs: the G-Men face the Commanders, Vikings and Raiders.

DROP

— QB Aaron Rodgers, Steelers: Rodgers looked like a 41-year-old quarterback with a broken left hand on Sunday against the Bills. He hasn’t topped 200 passing yards in three straight games, and only has three TD passes in his last four.

— RB Tyjae Spears, Titans: I was hoping Tennessee would give Spears more run at the expense of Tony Pollard to go along with the Titans’ youth movement on offense, but it hasn’t happened. Pollard has been the early-down back with Spears handling passing situations.

— WR Andrei Iosivas, Bengals: I’m anticipating Tee Higgins making it through the NFL’s concussion protocol this week.

— RB Emanuel Wilson, Packers: Josh Jacobs looked fine on Thanksgiving in Green Bay’s victory at Detroit. Keep Wilson if you roster Jacobs. Otherwise, you can toss him back on the handcuff heap (unless you’re praying for Jacobs’ downfall).

— RB Joe Mixon, Texans: Mixon is inexplicably rostered in 30% of ESPN leagues and 25% of Yahoo leagues. He’s been on the non-football injury list since the offseason because of a foot issue that has not been elaborated upon. There still isn’t a timetable for his return. I seriously doubt he plays this season. Plus, Mixon turns 30 in July, an age when most running backs start to see regression.
