SAN DIEGO — Golf superstar and Genesis Invitation host Tiger Woods will play in his tournament that begins Thursday at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner has won 15 majors, second only to the 18 by Jack Nicklaus. He has won eight tournaments at Torrey Pines, including the 2008 U.S. Open.

The fact that Woods will play will spike interest in an already star-studded field.

The Genesis, which was displaced by wildfires in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, is designated as a “signature event” with a total payout of $20 million.

For comparison, the Farmers Insurance Open — held at Torrey Pines Jan. 22-25 and won by Harris English — paid out $9.3 million. Signature events also award more FedEx Cup points.

Woods, one of the greatest golfers of all time, last won on Tour at the Zozo Championship in Chiba, Japan, in October of 2019. That tied him with Sam Snead for the most Tour victories all time at 82.

In 2024, Woods played five events, making one cut.
