Costco plans to serve Coke and a smile -- and a hot dog

In the Costco Cola Wars, Pepsi won the battle — but it appears Coca-Cola won the war.
Costco will begin stocking Coca-Cola products in the food courts of its warehouse stores beginning this summer, replacing the PepsiCo drinks it’s sold since 2013.
Ron Vachris, CEO of the Issaquah-headquartered company, confirmed the change in a shareholders meeting last week.
“Yes, that is accurate,” he replied to a question about whether food courts were switching to Coca-Cola products. He didn’t specify when the change would occur or any additional details, such as which drinks will be offered.
The price of the cult-favorite $1.50 hot-dog-and-drink combo doesn’t appear to be changing; Costco leaders have not indicated a possible increase and a co-founder once said he would be dead before that price changed. (He’s alive.)
Costco’s food courts are a big get for Coca-Cola. In 2024, Costco sold 229 million hot dog-and-soda combos, an increase from nearly 200 million in 2023. That’s in addition to customers buying a 20-ounce drink on its own or with other food options.
During the meeting, held virtually, Costco leaders also offered other staggering sales numbers: 154 million rotisserie chickens sold globally, 518,000 carats of diamonds and 8.9 million pairs of glasses.
Costco historically has pitted Pepsi against Coke in its soda contract bids, and in 2013 switched from Coke to Pepsi as a cost-saving measure to keep its $1.50 combo price. A Costco vice president told BenNET at the time that the change was a “big shift” but that it was “our job to preserve the integrity of the price point.”
Costco didn’t respond to requests for comment, nor did PepsiCo or Coca-Cola.
