Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams announced Tuesday he’s retiring after 27 years with the tech company.

Sabih Khan, senior vice president of operations, will be taking on the role of COO as “part of a long-planned succession” later this month, Apple said in a statement.

Williams will stay on to oversee Apple’s design team, as well as the Apple Watch and the Health app, until he officially retires late in the year.

Williams, 62, previously headed Apple’s manufacturing operations department and its industrial design team. Prior to his decades with the company, he worked as an engineer and technical leader at GE Plastics.

“He helped to create one of the most respected global supply chains in the world; launched Apple Watch and overseen its development; architected Apple’s health strategy; and led our world class team of designers with great wisdom, heart and dedication,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said when announcing the change.

Williams said that after 27 years with the company and 40 years in the industry, he now plans to focus on spending more time with his family and friends.

Khan has meanwhile been with Apple for 30 years and has served as senior VP of operations since 2019.

“While overseeing Apple’s supply chain, he has helped pioneer new technologies in advanced manufacturing, overseen the expansion of Apple’s manufacturing footprint in the United States, and helped ensure that Apple can be nimble in response to global challenges,” Cook said of Khan. “He has advanced our ambitious efforts in environmental sustainability, helping reduce Apple’s carbon footprint by more than 60%.”
