Intel chops several hundred Bay Area tech jobs as chipmaker retrenches

SANTA CLARA, California — Intel has disclosed plans to slash more than 400 Bay Area jobs this month, in an ominous sign that some tech companies must navigate a dreary economic landscape.
The semiconductor colossus has revealed a decision to cut 410 jobs in the Bay Area during July, according to official WARN notices that Intel filed with the state Employment Development Department.
Santa Clara-based Intel has reported plans for job cuts that are poised to take effect during July, the EDD filings show.
Intel noted in its WARN letter that it had previously sent estimates to the state EDD that the company was planning to eliminate 215 jobs. Those estimates have been updated.
“We now anticipate that the number of Santa Clara employees scheduled to terminate during this period has increased to 410,” Intel director of corporate people movement James Warner stated in a July 7 letter that Intel sent to the state EDD.
All of the layoffs that Intel has disclosed for July will affect people who work at or near the company’s main headquarters complex in Santa Clara.
All of the Intel Bay Area job cuts in the current rounds of reductions are scheduled to occur on July 15, the EDD filings show.
Separately, Intel has reported plans to cut 174 jobs in the Sacramento County city of Folsom, EDD filings show. These staffing reductions were scheduled for July 11.
Intel stated that all of its planned staffing reductions would be permanent.
However, it’s also possible that some workers on the Intel layoff list might be able to keep working at the chipmaker.
“Some impacted employees may find comparable roles within Intel and remain employed,” Warner stated in the letter to the EDD.
The semiconductor company had previously disclosed its intentions to cut 20% of its global workforce, which would equate to 21,000 workers worldwide.
Intel is far from the only tech company that is eliminating jobs in the Bay Area.
Over the first five months of 2025, the Bay Area lost about 14,000 tech jobs, according to seasonally adjusted industry estimates that Beacon Economics derived from the EDD’s official monthly jobs report.
