Proposed drone squadron won't significantly affect the environment, Navy memo says

The Navy has determined that its proposed drone squadron won’t significantly affect the environment, according to a memo released Thursday.
Naval Station Norfolk is set to house the East Coast’s first carrier-based unmanned aircraft squadron. The MQ-25A Stingrays provide midair refueling to fighter jets and can assist with surveillance.
The Navy’s findings mean its plans can move forward without conducting a more in-depth environmental review.
A draft environmental assessment was made available this spring and a public meeting was held on May 20 in Norfolk. Only two public comments were submitted during the review period.
The Navy plans to build and upgrade facilities to support the new squadron between 2026 and 2029. Aircraft and personnel will be phased in by 2035.
