White to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles

Last time out, I showed you a finish to a 5-minute game I played. From the same game, I had an earlier opportunity to play a much better move. After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bc4 Nxe4 4.Nc3 (The Boden-Kieseritsky Gambit)Nxc3 5.dxc3 Bd6 A surprise and not good, but what to do with the clock ticking. I decided to just castle here and then attack, but I had a better move here. What was it and what would be the follow up continuation? SEE DIAGRAM
I should have remembered this attacking pattern, which brings up the point I made in the last column. 6.Ng5 0–0 6...Qf6 7.Nxf7 Rf8 8.Nxd6+ Qxd6 9.Qh5+ g6 10.Qxh7 Qf6 11.Bd3 d5 12.Bxg6+ Kd8 13.0–0 with an easy win 7.Qh5 h6 8.Nxf7 Rxf7 9.Qxf7+ Kh8 10.Bg5 hxg5 11.Qh5 mate
