Here’s another instructional game on how winning material can often come from IQP positions because of the mobility of the White pieces. The diagram is a model position for such starting points, and the modeler is none other than the late world champion, Botvinnik, who was superb in such positions.

Botvinnik – Batuyev, Leningrad, 1931, went 1.Nxf7 Rxf7 1...Kxf7 2.Bxe6+ (Also 2.Qxe6+ Kg6 3.d5 Nexd5 4.g4! Re8 5.Nxd5 Rxe6 6.Nf4+ Kh6 7.g5+ Kxg5 8.Nxe6+ Kh6 9.Nxd8) 2...Kg6 3.d5 h5 4.d6 Neg8 5.Qd3+ Kh6 6.Ne2! Rxc1 7.Rxc1 Nd7 8.Qd2+ Kh7 9.Bxd7 Qxd7 10.Rc7 Qf5 11.Rxb7 with easy wins in either case 2.Qxe6 Qf8 3.Ne4 Rxc1 4.Rxc1 Nfd5 5.Nd6 Ba8 6.Re1 g6 7.Nxf7 Qxf7 8.Qxe7 and wins.
