Shouldn’t Christians’ behavior be different?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: I do volunteer work along with many others who say they’re Christians, but their language and humor sure don’t reflect it. Are these things overlooked by God? The Biblical phrase “by their fruits you shall know them” means to many people to feed the hungry and give to the poor, while behaving in ways that dishonor Christ. Many secular groups do humanitarian work all over the world; I know because I’ve helped them too. Shouldn’t Christians’ behavior be different? – F.H.

A: A Christian’s behavior is shown in many ways: the things we say, as well as the things we do not say; the things we do, as well as the things we don’t do. While Christianity is not primarily a matter of externals, it does find expression in conversation, habits, recreation, emphasis, and ambitions.

A Christian should examine his heart. Does my conversation honor Christ? Are my habits those of which He approves? Is my recreation and leisure time spent in ways His presence can be a part? Can people tell from my attachment to material things whether I’ve set my affection on things above, or settle for attachment to this world? Do people see in me an ambition for place and position in accord with that of a Christian? The Bible declares that “by their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7:20, NKJV).

The world doesn’t have much respect for those who claim Christianity but instead are frauds whose profession is not sincere. The Bible teaches that faith will manifest itself in three ways: in doctrine (what we believe), in worship (our communion with God), and in morality (the way we live and behave). The Bible says, “Lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession [profession in the KJV] in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:12, NKJV).
