Gadgets: Open-ear headphones; remote cases
Published in Science & Technology News
AceFit's new Air Open Ear Bluetooth sports true wireless (model FA002) headphones are a solid entry into the relatively new category of open-ear headphones.
If you do not like traditional earbuds that sit inside your ear, you might like this style. These sit on your ear. In most cases, they wrap around your neck or have ear hooks to wrap around your ear for stability. Either way, the sound is loud and clear, but lets you hear your environment.
The AceFit Air Open Ear headphones each have an ear hook and a minuscule 0.26-ounce weight, providing all-day comfort. Inside each earbud is a 20 mm rectangular audio driver, with the speaker described as a 3-magnet ultra-linear speaker. If you wear glasses, the AceFit Air's are made with 0.7 mm ultra-fine titanium wire, so they will not conflict with the frames of your glasses, as I confirmed with my testing.
The sound quality is impressive. I tested it with my typical variety of playlists and a spring training baseball game while getting my lawn in shape. Everything was heard loudly and clearly. Any adjustment I made for personal preferences on the sound, including deep bass, passed the test. High volumes were even successful without any distortion.
The ergonomic, soft and smooth hooks are made with liquid silicone. Along with the open-ear design, they are ideal for public activities where you want the music playing and still want to hear the surroundings, such as oncoming vehicles. Uses include cycling, yoga, running, walking and landscaping.
With Bluetooth 5.4, they paired with ease, and the IP54 waterproof rating kept them safe from moisture, including sweat. Four microphones are built-in with ENC noise cancellation for crystal-clear hands-free cell phone calls. The on-ear touch controls are responsive for music selections, volume, answering calls and accessing voice assistants.
You'll get about 8 hours of playtime with music at 50% volume before a charge is needed with the included 500mAh storage/charging case. A 10-minute charge will yield an hour of playtime, and a full charge takes about an hour. The 1.04-inch thick USB-C charging case takes 2 hours for a full charge and will produce 25 hours of use.

Where is the remote? If you have one of the 73&Sunny GripStand remote cases, you'll ask that question less and less. The case is for the small remote controls that come with many of today's popular streaming boxes. It is one of those gadgets you think you don't need, but once you have it, you wonder how you lived without it.
They have models for Apple TV, Roku Express, Roku Voice and the Alexa Voice Remote Pro. Each silicone remote cover is available in attractive, vibrant colors (vary by model) and has a patent-pending stand-up design, which, as the name says, lets it stand vertically with your remote in the case.
The superior glow feature will glow brightly in the dark for up to 10 minutes and softly for about an hour. The glowing intensity will vary depending on the light exposure and room brightness or darkness. Its grip texture feels comfortable in your hand and reduces the chances of it sliding between furniture cushions. It also provides protection for accidental drops. A handheld lanyard is attached to the side.
Another innovation of GripStand is an inside compartment, making it compatible with AirTag and Tile Mates Bluetooth trackers (not included). A small compartment in the bottom of the grip will house the tracker and not get in the way of the remote. If it really gets misplaced, the trackers will give you the exact location.
While your remote is in the GripStand, all the features are fully accessible. The front-facing buttons are open with a cutout, and the side buttons for volume (if the remote has it) work perfectly.
The prices vary from $19.99 to $24.95 depending on the model and come in various colors and color combinations.
