Guardians get to Yankees in sixth, spoil Will Warren's best start yet
Published in Baseball
After only recording five outs in his last start, Will Warren didn’t have to clear a high bar for a better outing on Tuesday night.
But the Yankees’ rookie looked as good as he has all season against the Guardians, keeping the Guardians scoreless for the first five innings. Alas, that wasn’t enough for the Yankees in a 3-2 loss.
The Yankees, leading 2-0, saw their evening unravel in the sixth when Steven Kwan and Nolan Jones each singled off Warren to open the inning. That knocked the righty out of the game.
With Mark Leiter Jr. on the mound, José Ramírez then struck out before Kwan and Jones broke for a double steal. As they did, Leiter missed an outside target as J.C. Escarra prepared to throw, leading to a passed ball. Kwan never stopped running from second and managed to score. Jones advanced to third.
Kyle Manzardo then drove Jones in with a double, which fell in front of a diving Aaron Judge in right. With two outs on the board, Angel Martínez then picked up an RBI single on a looping liner that Anthony Volpe couldn’t field cleanly behind second base.
From there, Cleveland’s bullpen kept the Yankees off the board. Warren, meanwhile, ended up with three hits, two earned runs, one walk, five strikeouts and 82 pitches over five complete innings.
While the Yankees’ offense didn’t do much against the Guardians’ relievers and their ace, Tanner Bibee, there were a few positives.
Ben Rice provided the first in his return to the starting lineup following an elbow bruise, as he lofted Bibee’s first pitch of the game over Progressive Field’s left field fence.
Rice now has six home runs this season.
Judge, meanwhile, went 4 for 4 with a double. The performance raised his average to an outstanding .414.
Judge, who also stole a base and made a diving catch, has a 1.231 OPS as well. However, his perfect night at the plate wasn’t enough for the Yankees to tie their three-game series in Cleveland, as the Bombers’ lineup went 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.
With the series now lost, the Yankees will try to salvage it with a win before taking off on Thursday.
Carlos Rodón is scheduled to pitch the finale on Wednesday. He’ll be opposed by Luis L. Ortiz.
