Rookies Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero make big contributions for the White Sox in 8-0 win over Twins

CHICAGO — Chicago White Sox rookies stepped up in a big way Sunday to secure a series win against the Minnesota Twins.
Colson Montgomery hit a two-run home run, Kyle Teel had three hits, two RBIs and two runs, and Edgar Quero singled twice and drove in three runs for the Sox in an 8-0 victory in front of 18,723 at Rate Field.
“When those guys are playing well, we’re going to have a chance to win some games,” manager Will Venable said. “And they’re going to be right there in the thick of it. Obviously, they’re a big part of our future and (they) also give us the best chance to win on a daily basis.
“Those guys, as they’ve continued to make their adjustments throughout the season, have done a really nice job being consistent for us.”
Montgomery homered for the third straight game, helping the Sox take two of three in the series.
“Having him have that kind of success here is good and I’m very happy for him and for the team, too,” center fielder Luis Robert Jr. said through an interpreter.
Montgomery hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning on Friday. He had the first grand slam of his career in the second inning on Saturday. Sunday’s two-run home run came in the second inning.
“It was a great swing,” Venable said. “Saw the power today, it was awesome. When he clicks a ball, it goes over the fence.
“That’s been great, he’s in a good spot. Just got to keep it going.”
The Sox continued their offensive output. They have scored at least seven runs in five of their last six games.
The Sox reached that mark by the second inning on Sunday.
“I felt like we created momentum early and just kept it rolling throughout the game,” Teel said.
They scored three runs in the first, which featured five singles against Twins starter Taj Bradley.
Mike Tauchman singled, advanced to third on a single by Miguel Vargas and scored on a single by Teel. Robert reached on an infield hit. And with one out, Quero came through with the two-run single.
“Edgar’s a great player and he comes up clutch so much,” Teel said. “So when I’m on second, I’ve got full confidence he’s going to get me in.”
The Sox added to the lead with four runs in the second. Tauchman scored again on a single by Teel. Vargas came home on a throwing error. And Montgomery hit the two-run home run, his 13th of the season, to extend the lead to 7-0.
“We know (Bradley has) got a great fastball,” Teel said. “I feel like our focus was just to get on the heater. You know with a guy like that, that’s what you have to do just because his fastball is so good.”
Bradley allowed seven runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks in five innings. The Sox also had success against Bradley when he was with the Tampa Bay Rays on July 23 in Tampa, Fla. He surrendered four runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings in a game the Sox won 11-9.
“I thought we did a good job the first time against him in Tampa,” Venable said, “and then today, he probably would say he didn’t have his best stuff as far as command, especially when we were able to force him into the zone and make some good contact.”
Quero knocked in Teel with a single in the seventh for the game’s final run. The Sox finished with 12 hits. They had at least 10 hits in each of the three games in the series.
“It’s nice to have a cushion there,” Venable said of the early offense. “But you know they’re a good offensive team. You have to continue to throw strikes, not give them any free passes. Our guys did a really nice job of that today.
“You’ve got to continue to play clean baseball and try to tack on and, of course, throw strikes on the mound. And we were able to do that. Really, a nice team effort tonight.”
Starter Yoendrys Gómez and relievers Brandon Eisert, Mike Vasil and Wikelman González combined to allow five hits in the shutout, their seventh of the season. Gómez allowed two hits, struck out six and walked three in 4 2/3 innings.
“Just attacking the hitters, and I felt good,” Gómez said, through an interpreter, of his outing.
The defense, particularly Robert in center field, also shined on Sunday. He made two tremendous diving catches, robbing Trevor Larnach and Austin Martin of hits in the third and fifth innings, respectively.
“I’m thankful because he saved a couple runs there,” Gómez said. “Also, I’m glad the team played the way we did.”
