Former Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson was arrested Sunday morning in Texas and booked into jail on suspicion of DWI and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
Peterson, 40, was taken into custody around 9:30 a.m. by police in Sugar Land, Texas, and booked into jail in Fort Bend County, records show.
Police in the city southwest of Houston confirmed the arrest, but no other information was immediately available.
His arrest in Texas comes about six months after he was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Richfield, Minn. Peterson was in the Twin Cities attending the Vikings’ NFL draft party on April 25. He was driving 83 mph in a 55 mph zone when he was stopped at 3:20 a.m. Four passengers were in the vehicle, Minnesota State Patrol said at the time.
A state trooper administered a preliminary breath test at the Hennepin County jail that measured Peterson’s blood alcohol content at 0.14%, nearly twice the legal limit in Minnesota, the patrol said. That case remains open, and Peterson’s next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 24.
Peterson has had other run-ins with the law. In June, he allegedly got into a fight with a man while playing cards at a club in Texas.
Peterson played for the Vikings from 2007 to 2016 before bouncing to several other teams and ending his career playing one game in 2021 with the Seattle Seahawks.
His career ended with him rushing for 14,918 yards, fifth all-time in the National Football League. His best season rushing was in 2012, when he gained 2,097 yards.
In November 2014, Peterson pleaded no contest in Texas to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault against his 4-year-old son. Peterson admitted during interviews with child protection officials and police that he twice hit his son, once with a belt and once with a switch.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him for the balance of that season.
In 2009, police pulled Peterson over in Edina, Minn., for going 109 mph in a 55 mph zone.
