SEATTLE — Mason Marchment scored in his Seattle debut Thursday night as the Kraken won a season opener for the first time in five tries, 3-1 at Climate Pledge Arena.

Jared McCann made it 3-1 off a lovely swat pass from Matty Beniers behind the Anaheim Ducks net. McCann has four goals in five Kraken season openers. His linemate Jordan Eberle picked up his fourth assist in five Seattle openers.

Vince Dunn scored the Kraken’s first goal of the season for the second straight year. He beat Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal through a double screen — Anaheim defender Frank Vatrano, who tried to block it, and Seattle teammate Eeli Tolvanen in front of the net.

Dunn had a hand in Anaheim’s tying goal as well. He was about to clear the zone but had the puck taken right off his stick. The Ducks had the Kraken spinning while trying to stop the inevitable, which was Beckett Sennecke’s first NHL goal.

The Ducks seemingly caught a massive break when Kraken goaltender Joey Daccord’s stick slid behind the net and he made an awkward skate save, pinning the puck against the goal post. Former Everett Silvertip Olen Zellweger illegally pushed Daccord’s pad, and the puck, into the net.

Referee Pierre Lambert — no relation to Kraken coach Lane Lambert that we’re aware of, as they’re from different parts of Canada — watched the puck disappear below Daccord’s skate from up the ice but didn’t whistle play dead. Instead he signaled a goal behind the net. It was immediately overturned.

Brandon Montour returned after missing nearly all of training camp because of surgery to remove a bursa on his ankle. His return was in doubt until the day before the opener, but he said he felt fine. Sure enough, the defenseman did nearly all of the setup work on Marchment’s goal. He dodged a hit along the boards and chased the puck behind the Ducks’ net, where he slid it to crashing Marchment.

Six-foot-five pest Marchment is coming off back-to-back 22-goal seasons with the Dallas Stars. The winger was caught in a salary cap crunch this summer and dealt to the Kraken for third- and fourth-round picks.

Defenseman Ryan Lindgren almost scored in his Kraken debut as well. Lindgren, a free agent signing, took off down the ice with Jaden Schwartz. He received a pass from fellow blueliner Jamie Oleksiak, who had just exited the penalty box. Lindgren was all alone in front of the goaltender and took the shot.

Dostal slammed his pads shut. He wasn’t fully confident he had it and looked backward for the puck.

At the other end of the ice, Daccord made 35 saves.

The Kraken are 10-4-1 in 15 games against the Ducks, which is their most wins against any franchise. Anaheim has been sixth or worse in the eight-team Pacific Division the entire time the Kraken have been active that no doubt plays in.
