'We're playing good hockey': Wings survive late goals to down Kings in shootout
Published in Hockey
Resiliency has been a key buzzword around the Detroit Red Wings this season and rarely have they exhibited it more than during Thursday's 4-3 overtime victory in Los Angeles.
The Wings won the shootout 1-0, with Lucas Raymond scoring the lone goal and goaltender Cam Talbot making all three saves.
But the Wings survived an apparent Los Angeles game-winning power play goal in overtime, which was disallowed when Kevin Fiala interfered with Talbot with 38.7 seconds left before scoring.
The Wings killed off the rest of the power play — the Wings killed all four Los Angeles power plays — and forced the shootout.
The Wings also survived Kings' Corey Perry and Quinton Byfield scoring goals 40 seconds with Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper pulled, tying the game 3-3 and forcing overtime.
"We're confident in what we can do," Alex DeBrincat told FanDuel Sports Network. "We've showed to this point of the season no matter what challenge we get, we fight through it and that's a testament to our team. We're playing good hockey right now."
Marco Kasper, mired in a goal-scoring slump, scored two goals with the second a tap in of Mason Appleton's pass in front at 14 minutes 45 seconds of the third period, giving the Wings a 3-1 lead.
But Perry scored his fourth goal, at 17:47 of the third period, cutting the Wings' lead to 3-2 on a tap in at the post, then Byfield scored his third at 18:27 in the slot.
Talbot stopped 35 shots against his former team to earn the victory.
The Wings moved to 8-3-0 on the season and tied Montreal atop the Atlantic Division with 16 points - just two points behind Pittsburgh for most in the NHL.
Alex DeBrincat and Kasper scored second period Wings power play goals.
Kasper's first goal, and his first since Oct. 11, put the Wings ahead 2-1.
Axel Sandin-Pellikka's shot from the top of the slot was redirected by Kasper net-front, and finding a hole past Kuemper. The Kings challenged the goal for a high stick by Kasper — and it was close — but was ruled a good goal at 15:46.
Alex Laferriere (shorthanded) scored for the Kings.
Laferriere opened the game's scoring at 12:39 of the second period. Byfield found Laferriere with a lane up ice, Laferriere outraced the Wings to the puck, then drove to the net and placed a backhander past Talbot for his third goal.
But on the same power play, the Wings quickly answered with DeBrincat's third goal in three games. Raymond found DeBrincat open and DeBrincat ripped a one-timer that flew past Kuemper at 13:22, or 43 seconds after Laferriere gave the Kings a quick lead.
The Wings visit Anaheim Friday in what'll be a return to the Honda Center for goaltender John Gibson, who starred for a decade with the Ducks but was traded to the Wings in June.
