The Blues had their chances to make this road trip a great one. Another presented itself on Wednesday night.

But the Blues lost again in overtime, 3-2 to the Devils, as St. Louis finished off a five-game road trip with a 1-1-3 record. Simon Nemec scored the game-winning goal for New Jersey with 2:02 left in overtime.

The Blues dropped to 0-7 in games decided in overtime or a shootout.

Cam Fowler and Robert Thomas scored for the Blues, while Timo Meier and Nico Hischier found the back of the net for New Jersey. Jordan Binnington made 26 saves for St. Louis.

The Blues return home for a Black Friday matinee against the Senators at 3 p.m.

Binnington sharp early

The Blues needed Binnington to be good in the early going, and he delivered. Binnington made three saves in the opening 46 seconds of the first period Wednesday night, allowing the Blues enough breathing room to take a 1-0 lead on Fowler's first goal of the season.

Fowler capitalized on an extended offensive zone possession for the Blues with a slap shot from the boards at 2:16 of the first period. Nathan Walker kept the possession alive by swatting Logan Mailloux's blocked shot to Fowler in the left circle.

The 23-game goalless streak to start the season was tied for the second-longest in Fowler's career (he also had zero goals in his first 23 games last season). As he skated by the bench to celebrate the goal, he grabbed the back of his jersey, as if to chuck the imaginary monkey off his back.

The Devils had seven of the game's first eight shots on goal.

Meier tied the game at 1 for the Devils at 11:02 of the first period, taking advantage of a turnover by Dalibor Dvorsky behind the net. Dvorsky's pass behind his own net was picked off by Jesper Bratt, and Meier eventually cleaned up a rebound of Dougie Hamilton's point shot that was deflected by Hischier.

Thomas regained a one-goal lead for the Blues with a power-play goal with 5:23 remaining in the first period, curling off the left wing and toe-dragging before beating Jacob Markstrom clean.

The Blues were on an abbreviated power play thanks to Mathieu Joseph's hustle on the penalty kill. Joseph won a puck in the neutral zone, forcing Hamilton to take an interference penalty to prevent a breakaway for Joseph.

Joseph made his return to the Blues lineup Wednesday after he was a healthy scratch in the previous three games. He replaced Alexey Toropchenko on the fourth line.

Kill gives one up

The Blues penalty kill allowed its first goal of the road trip on Wednesday night when Hischier scored his eighth goal of the season at 8:49 of the second period to tie the game at 2.

St. Louis entered the game 8 for 8 on the road trip and 17 for its last 19 on the kill.

Hischier pounced on a rebound of Meier's shot, evading a Tyler Tucker check and tucking the puck past Binnington. The Blues were shorthanded due to Justin Faulk's tripping penalty.

St. Louis had a big opportunity in the third period to score a power-play goal of their own, courtesy of Ondrej Palat's double minor for high-sticking. The Blues have five shots on goal but couldn't find the back of the net.

Line changes galore

All four forward lines for the Blues were different than they were Monday night against the Rangers.

Thomas centered the top line between familiar linemates Pavel Buchnevich and Jordan Kyrou. Dylan Holloway, Dvorsky and Jake Neighbours formed the second line, with Brayden Schenn, Pius Suter and Jimmy Snuggerud together on the third.

Joseph took Toropchenko's spot on the fourth line, as Toropchenko became the 11th different Blues player to be a healthy scratch this season.
